How much does outlet installation cost in Hamilton?
+
The cost depends on what the job involves. Replacing an existing outlet
with a new receptacle, GFCI or USB outlet is a quick job, while adding a
new outlet where there was none takes longer because a cable has to be
run through the wall from a nearby circuit. A 240V outlet or a dedicated
circuit costs more because it needs a new line from the panel. We give
you a fixed price before any work starts.
My GFCI outlet won't reset. What should I do?
+
First, check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker, because a GFCI
will not reset without power. Next, look for another GFCI in the
bathroom, kitchen, garage or outside, since one GFCI often protects
several outlets further down the line. Press the reset button firmly.
If the GFCI outlet is still not resetting or trips again right away,
the receptacle may be faulty or there may be moisture or a fault
somewhere on the circuit, and it should be checked by an electrician.
Why did my outlet stop working when no breaker tripped?
+
When an electrical outlet stops working without a tripped breaker,
the most common causes are a tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit, a
loose wire connection in the outlet box, or a worn-out receptacle. A
loose connection can overheat over time, so if resetting nearby GFCIs
does not help, stop using the outlet and have it inspected.
Why is my outdoor outlet not working?
+
Outdoor outlets are GFCI protected, and they often share protection
with a GFCI in the garage, bathroom or basement. Check those first.
Rain, snow and condensation can also trip the GFCI or damage the
receptacle. If the outlet has no in-use cover, water can get inside,
so we recommend replacing it with a weather-resistant outlet and a
proper outdoor cover.
What are the electrical code requirements for kitchen island outlets in Canada?
+
The Canadian Electrical Code, as adopted in Ontario, sets rules for
how many receptacles a kitchen counter needs and how they are spaced,
including outlets for islands and peninsulas. Kitchen counter outlets
must be on the correct type of circuits and have the right protection.
Pop-up or recessed outlets can keep an island countertop clean, but
only approved models can be used. We plan kitchen outlet locations
with your renovation layout so the installation passes ESA inspection.
Can I install or replace an outlet myself in Ontario?
+
In Ontario, homeowners can do electrical work in a house they own and
live in, but they must file their own notification with the Electrical
Safety Authority and have the work inspected. Mistakes like reversed
wiring, missing grounding or the wrong outlet type in a wet area are
common and can create shock or fire risks. A licensed electrical
contractor files the ESA notification for you and guarantees the work
meets code.
Do I need child proof outlets if I have young kids?
+
Tamper-resistant outlets are the modern alternative to plastic plug
covers. They have built-in shutters that only open when both prongs of
a plug are inserted at the same time, which stops children from pushing
keys, pins or other objects inside. Current Ontario code requires
tamper-resistant receptacles in most new and replaced residential
outlets, and we can swap existing outlets throughout your home in a
single visit.
Can you move an outlet to a different spot on the wall?
+
Yes. We can relocate an outlet for new furniture, a wall-mounted TV,
a kitchen renovation or a home office layout. We extend the existing
circuit to the new location and close off the old box properly, since
an outlet cannot simply be covered with drywall. We keep wall openings
as small as possible, and minor drywall patching and painting can be
arranged separately.
